2XU Melbourne Triathlon Series Race 6

The Davey Black Triathlon Club had a big day out at the final race of the 2XU Melbourne Triathlon Series in St Kilda on Sunday.

The weather was amazing, the course was flat and fast and athletes had the choice of the Sprint Distance race – 750m Swim, 26.6km Bike & 5km Run, or the Olympic Distance 1500m Swim, 40km Bike & 10km Run.

The Olympic Distance was the last chance for athletes to gather points for the Gold Coast World Championships team selection so the competition was high. The swim was 2x 750m laps out into Port Phillip Bay, with a 50m beach run in between laps. The Bike was a flat and fast 3x 13.3km loop, which did include 3 U-Turns each lap which slowed things down a touch, but gave an advantage to those Davey Black athletes who have been in the Strength and Conditioning studio working on leg strength! The Run was 2x 5km laps along the St Kilda and Elwood foreshore.

The Sprint Distance was a regulation 750m swim, 2x 13.3km laps of the bike course and 1x 5km run loop.

The day started perfectly with a slightly chilly breeze blowing and calm waters on the Bay. As the first few age group waves started the sun started to bring some warmth, and before too long it was a perfect race day. By the time the Sprint race had started, it was getting quite warm; up into the high 20’s, and there was a moderate breeze blowing out on the bike course that made the return from Elwood slightly harder than the trip there. As the day wore on, the slightly windy bike leg and the growing heat on the run course began to take it’s toll on a lot of participants, and finding a pace and intensity that was going to get you across the line became the number one concern for most.

All of the Davey Black Triathlon crew put in some amazing efforts with almost every member coming away with a PB in either a single leg or overall race time. Coach Steve was very pleased with everyone’s results given the huge load placed on the athletes both mentally and physically since the first race of the season all the way back in Yarrawonga in October 2017!

We will saddle up for one more race at Challenge Melbourne on the 22nd of May. Some athletes are already on a rest, and some are looking forward to Port Mac and Cairns 70.3 races.
