Race results for the Challenge Melbourne Triathlon

Sunday 22nd of April signalled the final race of the inaugural Short Course Melbourne Triathlon season for the Davey Black Triathlon Club. It has been a huge season with every athletedeveloping skills, strength, speed, power or all of the above, as well as experiencing the highs and lows of chasing points in the pursuit of World Championships.

Challenge Melbourne has had a chequered history of bad weather over the last 4 years, so to get to race morning with a slightly overcast day of mid 20’s was a relief, especially given this season already had seen at 5 races that our athletes have attended have the swim cancelled due to water quality, dangerous conditions and sharks!

Davey Black Triathlon Club had 2 athletes racing the Half Ironman (1.9km Swim, 90km Ride & 21.1km Run), and 9 athletes racing the longer than usual Sprint Distance race (700m Swim, 30km Ride & 7km Run). It would be safe to say that the majority of the athletes were exhausted mentally and physically from a very long and packed race season, and for all except one, this was just a ‘closure’ race to have fun and say goodbye to 2017/18.

As you can see by the results below, everyone did a PB in one or multiple legs of their race, which is a huge result for each individual, and the team as a whole.

Podium Congratulations to George Wright, Maike Wolf, and (unofficially) Sam O’Brien.

Race of the Day Congratulations to Kat Carr who endured weeks of friendly banter with her husband, and was able to pull in a 2:30min head start and catch him at the 3.5km mark of the run, then had the sportsmanship to run the last 3.5km along side him which allowed them to cross the line together – something that most racing partners the world over would only dream of being able to do once in a lifetime! I’m glad you enjoyed the moment you two!

PB of the Day has to go to Radele Berriman who did the Half distance after joining Davey Black only a couple of months ago. After injecting a bit more intensity into her program, Radele came away with a 20min overall PB for the day, breaking her target time of 5:30hr by almost 6min. Well done on all the hard work and consistency you have displayed Radele, what a great result!

Welcome back and Goodbye to Andrea Campi. After having a new child 6 months ago, very little sleep and a new job, Andrea finally made it to the start line of a race… the final race of the season. He can now go to pasture for the preseason.

A big result from James Straw in his final race. He joined Davey Black 8 weeks post knee recon and has just got faster and faster every race. He again PB’d across swim, bike and run this race to finish his season still on an upward trend. Very much looking forward to next season!

Jeremy Kirsa has been a big presence in the Strength and Conditioning Studio, both in stature and consistency. Getting the base strength into his body before loading up the triathlon training has really paid dividends with Jeremy knocking out a swim, bike and run PB over this race. Another one to watch for next season.

Kristy West has battled motherhood, work and travel as well as a body that needs TLC to keep her moving forward. Kristy has also spent a lot of time in the Fitness Studio with our S&C Coaches to get her stronger and reduce her ocurrence of injury. On Sunday Kristy ran longer and faster than she has in a long time, showing that all her hard base work is paying off. Great run, and a handy swim too!

Kerry Toumbourou joined Davey Black for the Corporate Games Boot Camp, and since then has completed several longer triathlons, and most impressively, a 5km open water swim several weeks ago. Kerry had a greats swim and bike and a solid run, and is really starting to show signs of being a contender next season.

Tim Ovadia had a great day out in prep for Cairns 70.3. His paces were all faster than 2 weeks ago when he did the Olympic distance, despite the distance being twice as long. Keep an eye out for his Cairns result as he looks like he is heading in the right direction very fast!

And last, but absolutely not least – Charlotte Forbes, Anna Truong, Edwina Dalco, Ryan Martin, Gary Ryder-Robinson, Emily Wilde, Vicki Hutchings, Chrissie Straw, Marie Segrave, Lou Hodgins, Laura Rostron & Brett Meehan who came out and supported their team mates for the day, spurring them on to their success.

What a season! What a club! Now to focus on the Pt Mac, Cairns and Worlds 70.3 & Worlds Sprint and Standard prep and for the short course crew to have a rest!
